The Welshman Martin Phillips plays since 1981 for the BDO and was Team Captain of the Welsh national team several times.
He played his first BDO World Championship in 1991 but lost first round against Phil Taylor. 1992 he reached the quarter finals and again was eliminated by Phil Taylor. The following two years he was unlucky as well and met both times Bobby George in second round.
It took him almost ten years to qualify again for the World Championship years he seemed to have disappeared from the darts scene. Then - in 2003 - he was eliminated first round by John Walton.
Since 2007 his form seems to have returned and Phillips is back at the World Championship again. Phillips took part several times in the Winmau World Masters. 2007 he there was eliminated by John Walton who threw a Nine-Darter in the match. 2010 he reached the semi-finals.
In the same good form he played himself into the semi-finals of the World Championship 2010 and 2011. Martin Phillips has a few smaller tournament wins on his card, in 2006 he won the Wales National Championship and in 2010 he celebrated his biggest success so far and won the WDF Europe Cup singles.

Martin Phillips is not a fulltime professional, he works for the refuse collection.
