BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 1. Day

On the first day of the BDO World Championships of course in the center of interest stood the elimation of reigning champion Lisa Ashton. Ashton lost against the Japanese debutant Mikuru Suzuki with 0:2. Both of the sets went into a deciding leg and both times it was Suzuki who hit her double first.
The number 1 seed Mark McGeeney opened the tournament against Derk Telnekes and had no problems at all to prevail 3:1. Only in the second set of the match he couldn't keep up and Telnekes managed to draw 1:1. But McGeeney soon recovered and won the following two sets with ease to progress into the next round.
After the ladies match between Ashton and Suzuki in the afternoon session the preliminary round match between American Jim Widmayer and the former PDC player Nigel Heydon followed. First it was quite close. Widmayer won the first two sets and entered the break with a 2:0 lead. But after the break he never found his way back into the match and Heydon won the next three sets to progress into the first round where he'll meet Richard Veenstra.
In the last match of the afternoon Conan Whitehead played against Mertin Phillips. It was a thrilling match with many ups and downs which was only decided in the tie break when Whitehead went in front with an 120 checkout and managed to win the next leg as well with double 16.

The evening session started with another preliminary round match and another former PDC player - Wes Newton played against the in the UK Open always quite successful Paul Hogan. Newton had a bad day and never really was in the match though he managed to win the second set in the deciding leg. In the end Hogan won 3:1 and progressed without any problems into the next round.
In the ladies match of the night Dutch Sharon Prins met Roz Bulmer - who is fighting against cancer. It was not a good match. Highlight was a 156 Checkout of Prins who won 2:0. In the next round Prins will play against Suzuki and she to be sure has to improve.
In an all Australian preliminary round maTch Justim Thompson and Mal Cuming met. It was a very one-sidede match, Cuming won only two legs while Thompson played the highest average of the day. Thompson will play German Michael Unterbuchner in his next match,.
In the last match of the night with Tony O'Shea a BDO legend came on stage. He played against Wesley Harms, who turned out to be a very resilient opponent. O'Shea managed to lead with 2:1 but Harms didn't give in. He levelled instead and then won the fifth set of the match to progress into the second round.
