BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 1. Day

Highlights of a dramatic opening day of the 41st BDO Lakeside World Championship were a legend bowing out after a sudden-death shoot out and possibly the finest set in the championship's history.

Mark McGeeney 3 : 2 Martin Adams
The opening match of the championship, between No 2 seed Mark McGeeney and Lakeside legend Martin 'Wolfie' Adams, was as tight as it promised to be. It went all the way to a sudden death 11th leg in the fifth set - and McGeeney held his nerve better to ensure Adams's 25th consecutive appearance at the Lakeside was a brief one. There was to-and-fro tungsten throughout. McGeeney broke the Adams throw in the fourth leg of the fifth set to stay in the match - and two legs later, McGeeney had a dart at double 13 for a place in the second round. He put his dart just outside the wire. Chances to break came and went and the match ended up going all the way. Adams won the nearest the bulls eye for the throw in the deciding leg - and then his aim deserted him. He took until his 11th dart to find the treble 20 and back-to-back scores of 140 and 128 from McGeeney took the leg away from 'Wolfie.' That left McGeeney six darts to take out 74 - and his fifth found double top for the match.

Willem Mandigers 3 : 0 Nick Kenny
No 10 seed Willem Mandigers got his Lakeside campaign underway with a 3-0 win over Nick Kenny. The pivotal moment came in the fifth leg of the second set. Kenny was throwing to level the match at 1-1, but Mandigers stole the darts off him and took out 90 on the bulls eye for a 2-0 lead that left the Welshman with too much to do.

Lisa Ashton 2 : 0 Rhian Griffiths
Defending women's champion Lisa Ashton overcame early double trouble to defeat Rhian Griffiths 2-0. Ashton found herself 2-0 behind in the first set after blowing chances to win both the opening legs. After that, her finishing was 100 per cent. The turning point came in the third leg of the opening set. Griffiths threw 180 to leave 20 for the set and pile the pressure on Ashton to take out 82. The pressure seemed to switch on Ashton, she nailed double top with her last dart and didn't look back. She held her throw in the next leg and now in top gear, snatched the set by taking out 195 in six darts. Ashton polished off the match in the second set with check outs of 80 and 101.

Pengiran Mohamed 0 : 3 Gary Robson
Defending men's champion Glen Durrant will meet his "bogey" player in the first round on Sunday afternoon after Gary Robson won through against Pengiran Mohamed in their preliminary round match. Robson, making his 16th appearance at the BDO World Championship, was a 3-0 winner over his opponent from Brunei Darussalam.

Justin Thompson 3 : 2 Chris Gilliland
There was drama in the preliminary round match between Lakeside debutants Chris Gilliland (Northern Ireland) and Justin Thompson (Australia), to decide who meets Darryl Fitton in the first round. Gilliland spurned eight darts for the match in the fourth set - and Thompson made the most of the reprieve. He forced a deciding fifth set and seized control of it by winning the opening leg against the throw. There was no way back from there for Gilliland.

Deta Hedman 2 : 0 Rachna David
Women's No 1 seed Deta Hedman eased through to the quarter finals, beating a misfiring Rachna David 2-0. David settled into her rhythm quickly, throwing 140 in the first leg, but the Norwegian then twitched on the all-important doubles. She missed 10 darts at doubles in the first leg, allowing Hedman to come from nowhere to snatch a break. Hedman held her throw to see out the set and won the second without reply for the match.

Joe Chaney 0 : 3 Danny Noppert
Danny Noppert produced a solid performance, outplaying US No 1 Joe 'Chanesaw' Chaney. Noppert, beaten by Glen Durrant in last year's final, was on course for a three-figure average until he wobbled on his doubles near the finish and ended the match with 94.89. The 27 year old was at his best in the second set, blowing Chaney away with check outs of 121 and 126. Noppert really ought to have won the third set without reply as well, but with the match at his mercy, the Dutchman's radar went on the blink. He missed six chances to win the match - and Chaney came back to force a decider. 'Chanesaw' had a dart at double top for the set, missed and at the seventh attempt, Noppert was on target to clinch his place in the second round.

Scott Mitchell 3 : 2 Darius Labanauskas
The Best match of the day was a breath-taking shoot out between Scott Mitchell, the 2015 Lakeside BDO World Champion, and Darius Labanauskas. Mitchell won it 3-2 after weathering an astonishing bombardment in the opening set. That first set was of the highest quality, possibly one of the best ever seen at the Lakeside. Mitchell averaged 107.34 - and still lost the set. For four legs, neither missed much and when it mattered in the deciding leg, Labanauskas stayed at full throttle and Mitchell couldn't stay with him. Mitchell struggled to find the big trebles, enabling Labanauskas to get to a double first and snatch the opening set against the throw with a sky-scraping 113.27 average. Labanauskas also had three maximum 180s in the second set, but was otherwise a bit wayward and the more consistent Mitchell broke back to level the match. Mitchell won a scrappy third set, finding the set-winning double at the 10th attempt, and threw for the match in the fourth after breaking with a 12 darter. But when it seemed there was no way back for him, Labanauskas took advantage of a Mitchell dip to pull off a match-saving break, then held to send the match into a deciding fifth set. Labaunaskas would have been favourite for the match had he found double 18 to break in the opening leg of the fifth set. He was just off target - and Mitchell found an extra gear. He held his throw, broke in 12 darts and held for the match.
