BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 8. Day

Women
In the women's final Trina Gulliver played against Deta Hedman and Trina Gulliver won 3:2 to win her tenth title. In the first set both players showed some nerves. Hedman was sooner able to settle and she won the first set with a 105 finish in 15 darts. Gulliver answered in the second set and after a 133 checkout it was 1:1. Hedman found an answer in set 3 and threw a 13-darter. But Gulliver immediately could draw again. The following to legs were shared as well and a deciding fifth leg was necessary, which Hedman won with a double 20. That meant Hedman would need only one more set to win but so near to the finishing line she showed nerves again and Gulliver won set two for the 2:2 draw. Hedman kept on fighting in the fifth set but Gulliver showed some more clinical finishing and won the set without losing a leg.

Men
In the men's tournament the two semi-finals were played.
In the first semi-final Scott Waites played against Jamie Hughes and the match was clearly dominated by Waites, Hughes had not many chances. The first set Waites won without losing a leg. The second set was rather patchy. In the end one good leg by Waites was enough to win it. In the third set Waites dominated again by his good scoring. Hughes didn't manage to keep up his strong quarterfinal performance and so Waites won set four without problems as well. The fifth leg was a little bit better by Hughes, but Waites took more of his chances and was 5:0 in the lead. After the short interval Hughes seemed to have settled in the match and he won the sixth set with a 97 finish. But in the next leg Waites again was just too strong and he won it again without losing a leg.

The second semi-final was totally different - neither Jeff Smith nor Richard Veenstra managed to break away and the match ended in a tiebreak. The first set was won by Smith without problems and without losing a leg. Veenstra managed to draw in the fifth leg of the second set and he looked like he would win set three as well, but he missed seven darts at the doubles and Smith was back in the lead. The fourth set was rather evenly and again a fifth deciding leg was necessary which again was won by Veenstra. With his clinical finishing Smith won set 5 but again Veenstra squared in set 6 and fired by this Veenstra opened the following set strong. He missed three set darts but Smith couldn't take the chance and Veenstra for the first time in the match was in the lead. Smith returned very determined from the short interval and drew level 4:4 and he won the following set again. But Veenstra didn't give in and levelled again the 10th set. In the last set Smith won the first two legs but then wasted a Matchdart and Veenstra won the next to legs to level. A tiebreak was necessary and would be decided by a two legs lead. Smith managed to control and win the first of these legs and he produced his best darts of the match in the next almost throwing a nine-darter. With a ten-darter he won the leg, the set and the match.
