PDC Unicorn Women's World Championship - Report

The first PDC Unicorn Women's World Championship took place during a players championship weekend in Barnsley, a former mining town in the Manchester,Leeds and Sheffield region.

The venue was the Barnsley Metrodome, a building which houses the local swimming baths, a gym and several sports halls. 32 Ladies took part who had qualified over different ways most of them from the UK. The two North American participants Stacy Bromberg and Cindy Pardy won the American and the Canadian qualifier.

The World Championship started at 4 pm - a time the players championship already had reached the final rounds.

There were 16 boards (beside the practice boards) in the venue, eight at each of the narrow sides of the hall. The boards on one side were used for the ladies while on the other side the men more or less unobserved played on to the final in which Gary Anderson defeated Mark Walsh.

No spectators were allowed for the Ladies World Championship and a lot of the men together with their friends and guest already had left the venue. Most of the remaining people watched the ladies who were allowed to bring each two guest with them. I don't know who it was who accompanied Stacy Bromberg, Cindy Pardy was accompanied and supported by Gary Mawson.

The draw took place directly before the matches started, two of the pairs were a little bit unlucky as the two German ladies met in one and in the other the number 1 and number two of the BDO Irina Armstrong and Deta Hedman.

Irina Armstrong didn't survive the first round while Cindy Pardy managed to progress in a tough match against Marlene Badger. Stacy Bromberg had no problems against the Japanese qualifier Kazumi Nagakawa. But Cindy Pardy met in second round Fiona Carmichael who was on that day too strong for her and who later did win against Deta Hedman as well.

Stacy Bromberg showed two more great matches against Donna Maria Rainsley and the Irish Denise Cassidy, who often is doubles partner of John MaGowan. In the semifinals Stacy's opponent was Anastasia Dobromyslova and Stacy managed again to fight through while in the other semifinal Tricia Wright defeated Fiona Carmichael.

Stacy Bromberg and Tricia Wright now will meet in the televised final at the 24. July after the semifinals of the World Matchplay in Blackpool.
